The Department of Public Health Engineering is an important body under the Department of Local Government. The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) was established in 1935 with the responsibility of promoting public health through safe water supply.
At present, the department is entrusted with the responsibility of constructing safe water supply and sanitation system and waste management in the whole country except the area under WASA.
The Department of Public Health Engineering is working tirelessly to provide safe water and sanitation facilities to the public.
Maintenance of various types of safe water sources (tubewells) and sanitary latrines in rural areas is the main responsibility of the Department of Public Health Engineering.
Palli provides technical assistance to the Union Parishad through the W ATSAN Committee for the maintenance of water supply and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure, providing necessary assistance for strengthening health care and development of the surrounding environment.
Besides, it has been implementing necessary activities to maintain safe water supply and sanitation system in case of emergency due to floods, cyclones, epidemics etc.
As a result, Bangladesh ranks one of the top in South Asia in terms of safe water and sanitation coverage.
